Many users of social media, many of whom were female, expressed their approval of the joke, while others were quick to call attention to its inherent misogyny.

As one Twitter user wrote, “If Tiger spent three months a year bleeding and coping with period pain, they'd make a whole-ass documentary about how champions overcome insurmountable obstacles.”

Following the backlash, Woods “apologized” for the prank during a press conference, saying, "It was supposed to be fun and games but obviously it hasn't turned out that way.”

“If I offended anybody—it was just friends having fun. If I offended anybody in any way, shape, or form, I’m sorry.”
