Richard Belzer, an actor best remembered for his work on the cherished crime drama "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," passed away on Sunday at the age of 78.

Belzer started his career as a stand-up comic before making the transition to the big screen and appearing in a number of television series over the years.

"Anyone who ever had the pleasure of watching Richard Belzer portray Det. John Munch — whether on ‘Homicide’ or ‘Law & Order: SVU’ — over four decades will never forget how much he inhabited that beloved character to make it his own," the statement said

Before making a few episodes as a guest performer on "Saturday Night Live," Bridgeport, Connecticut native Belzer worked as a warm-up comic for the show in 1975

From that point on, he made appearances in both movies and television programs. His longest television role at the time was 10 episodes of the 1990 series "The Flash."

The character of Belzer, who appeared in more than 300 episodes, retired from the New York Police Department in season 15.
