John Mitchell, the Steelers' assistant coach, made his retirement official on Wednesday. He lived in Steel City for 29 years.

Mitchell had, to put it mildly, a remarkable career. He played at Alabama in the 1970s and broke the color barrier there.

In 1994, Bill Cowher hired Mitchell to lead the Steeler's defensive line. It was his position till 2006. He was given the position of associate head coach at the conclusion of that season.

From 2007 until 2022, Mitchell assisted the Steelers as an assistant coach. He thinks it's time to move on at this point.

"I'm grateful to the Rooney family for the wonderful opportunity to coach and work for the Steelers for nearly 30 years," Mitchell said.
