According to Tony Plohetski of The Austin American-Statesman, Travis County D.A. José Garza announced that Beard's charges of domestic and family violence had been dropped. He was detained in December on suspicion of suffocation and strangulation.

According to a police complaint, Randi Trew, Beard's fiance, said that Beard strangled, bit, and slapped her during a disagreement. Later, when asked why she didn't want Beard to be detained or charged, she denied informing police that he had strangled her.

"Chris has stated that he was acting in self-defense, and I do not refute that," Trew said in a statement. "I do not believe Chris was trying to intentionally harm me in any way."

On January 5, Texas dismissed Beard. He was entering the second year of a two-year contract that included a provision allowing for his termination for cause in the event of a criminal charge.
